Truly inspiring music/sound springs out from the heart & the soul. Music is the soul’s language and it converses directly with the listener’s hearts as well as soul, irrespective of what words or what language
it’s expressed in. The secret appeal of music lies probably in the tone, tune, pitch, notes, rhyme, rhythm,
melody, & diction which constitutes the soul & heart of music and makes the language more or less redundant.

Clear vocal music’s got its own appeal; however these essentials of music are independent entities and can have an impact, discounting the words. Probably that’s the reason we all love to listen to instrumental music, whichever culture or country it belongs to. Truly inspiring music will help you relax so that you can dance to its rhythm…so you can let go & be carried away by the utter joy of the rhythms & the rhymes. The wordless language that instrumental music induces brings out emotions & feelings that are too profound for words & give us wings to fly away towards unknown areas of bliss & joy. Relaxation music harmonizes with the wordless, pent up feelings within us & offers them outlets.

Truly inspirational music can be a replacement for meditation. Similar to meditation, this music transports us to some other world. While meditation involves that the person make a conscious endeavor to
reach the meditative state, inspirational music simply carries the person off on wings.

In case you’re a Buddhist who meditates on the Buddhism lines, then your meditation process will speed up when you accompany vocal music. At times, the substance of the associated music itself creates &
catalyses the meditation process, making it effortless. More often than not, it’s seen that the sounds of
relaxation music/ sound triggers meditation.

There can be several themes around which Meditation music can be composed. You don’t necessarily have to be seated in a specific posture at some specific time in order to meditate. In fact, one can meditate while he/she is walking in a crowded market on the footpath, travelling on a bus or
cycling. Today, majority people use their cell phones & iPod’s to store & listen to music through headphones which are to be plugged in your ears. This prevents the mind from drifting aimlessly, & keeps reminding the person that he/she is in a calm & quiet state of mind. Relaxation music invokes a person to stay detached & calm, yet lets him/her be blissful even when the person is in some tense situation.

Relaxation music has a range of themes which help compose & build a parallel state of mind in different people. Relaxation music promotes constant alertness & awareness with detachment that might terminate in keeping one aware, calm & alert even at the time when the soul departs from the body. The Ancient classical music in India was well-known to be powerful enough to influence all the elements present in
nature. The Raaga Malhaar was capable of creating clouds to bring rain…

One amongst the basic 5 yoga principles is Meditation. Meditation is that practice which involves a steady observation of one’s mind. The practice requires one to focus his/her mind at a particular point in order
to still the mind so you can clearly perceive what is known as the ‘self’. It is proven that through practicing Meditation, a person can over a period of time reach greater intellect, strength, will power & increased determination. Furthermore, yoga & meditation can help you attain a clear mind, increase concentration, and help you discover the tranquility & wisdom within you.

Yoga & meditation are completely & totally interrelated. To begin with, Yoga is the ancient traditional approach of life that encompasses thought as well as practice which aims at a person’s wellbeing
& good health– mental, emotional as well as physical – that is supposed to end in what is referred to as nirvana or moksha (i.e. emancipation or liberation). Meditation forms an intricate element of Yoga, and it is almost like one of its 8 limbs. In case you aren’t aware of the 8 yoga limbs, they are mentioned below:

# 1: Yamas (the Restraints or Don’ts)

#2: Niyamas (the Observances or Do’s)

#3: Asanas (the Poses & Exercises)

#4: Pranayamas (the Breathing techniques & exercises)

#5: Pratyahara (the Control over senses)

# 6: Dharana (i.e. Concentration)

#7: Dhyana (i.e. Meditation)

# 8: Samadhi (the state of super-consciousness)

Meditation, therefore, figures as the 7th seventh limb in Yoga – besides being variously called as Raja Yoga, Classical Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga or the Yoga of 8 Limbs. It’s the holistic art & science of living which aims to accomplish optimum mental, emotional and physical equilibrium, finally uniting the Supreme
Self and individual self.

The limb of meditation called Dhyana is an extremely powerful tool that coupled with Pranayamas (i.e. breathing techniques & exercises) helps to cool, pacify & calm a racy mind, thus helping it to see things just the way they are. Yoga meditation centers teach people certain techniques of meditation through which they can reach a state of quiet & calm within themselves. The instantaneous results are obvious in a peaceful & calm mind as well as a healthy body. Certain centers for Yoga meditation restrict themselves only to meditative practice; however there are others that do not. In these centers, the techniques of meditation are trained in combination with some other practices as well that include all the important Asanas (poses & exercises) along with Pranayamas (breathing techniques & exercises).

It’s hard to plunge straight into meditation; tougher is to achieve immediate or great outcomes. Even though there are hordes of institutes worldwide that are teaching meditative practices solely of some kind or another, but strictly speaking, beginners in Yoga are recommended to desist, until they have familiarized themselves with all the fundamentals & basics of Yoga which are needed to learn the art of meditation. Meditation schools teach diverse meditative techniques, like Vipassana Meditation, sound
meditation, odor meditation, breath meditation, color meditation, chakra meditation, etc.

Mindfulness & Meditation

The great discourse by Buddha- the Maha-Satipatthana Sutta, dedicated to the practices of mindfulness, says that both- the purpose & means to attain that object are all evidently laid down. Attentiveness to all body movements, attentiveness to the states of your mind that are ever changing, ought to be refined in order for you to see their true nature. Instead of recognizing these mental & physical phenomena with a false notion of the “self,” everyone must view them simply as they actually are: as the movements of the physical body, the collection of the 4 elements, (i.e. ‘mahabhutas’) which are subject to the physical law of causality as well as the flux of consecutive phases of awareness that arise and then elapse in answer to
the external stimuli. These are to be analyzed objectively, as if they are processes not connected with ourselves, instead belonging to some other order of phenomenon.

The True Self in Buddhist Meditation:

Where can egotism & selfishness advance if not directly from the notion of the “self” (i.e. ‘sakkayaditthi’)? So, if any meditation practice leaves egotism & selfishness unabated, then it clearly hasn’t been victorious. A tree’s judged by the fruit it bears, & similarly a man is judged by his actions; there’s no other standard. This is particularly true t comes to Buddhist psychology, since the person ‘is’ his/her actions. In the true sense, these people, or the continuity of vipaka & kamma that they stand for, are the lone claim that he/she can put together to any constant identity. Attentiveness in connection with the mind & the body serves to collapse the illusions of the self; furthermore, it cuts off all attachments
& craving to material objects, with the intention that eventually there’s neither a “self” who craves nor are there any objects of craving.

Concentration & Detachment: Buddhist Meditation

Detachment & objectivity are invaluable aids to a clear thinking; they allow a person to review a given state of affairs without bias, be that personal or else, moreover to take action in the situation with
discretion & courage. Another reward it bestows upon man is concentration – which is the gift to focus one’s mind & keep it progressively fixed at a particular point (i.e. one-pointedness or ‘ekaggata’). The mind’s the toughest to tame, for it restlessly roams in all directions as the wind, like a horse
that’s untamed, but once it’s entirely under control, the mind becomes the most influential instrument in the universe. Buddhist meditation says that a person, who has become the master of his mind, indeed becomes the master of all Three Worlds.

At the first stage, he’s without fear. Once we begin associating the body & mind (‘nama-rupa’) with ‘self’, fear arises. A person, who has rid himself of this delusion by recognizing that the 5 ‘khandha’ practice is only the expression of cause & effect, doesn’t fear misfortune or death. This man remains calm alike in victory and failures, unaffected by any praise or blames. This man only fears de-meritorious actions, for he knows that nobody & nothing in this world can possibly hurt him except for himself. As this person
detaches himself more & more, he becomes less prone to do any de-meritorious deeds.

Meditation has more than one benefit, stress reduction and overcoming worries & tensions being a few of the important benefits. Relaxation meditation, when practiced every day will help you overcome fears,
apprehensions, anxiety, thereby allowing you to live in the moment & truly enjoy life.

At some point in time, in our lives, we all face stressful situations, we are burdened by worries. It is often, that we do not realize how important it is for us to feel stress sometimes….you see, it is stress that pushes us to get into a run/fight mode….and it is essential that each one of us undergo that feeling once in a while to challenge ourselves. Chemicals- for instance adrenaline, cortisol & noradrenaline help us in getting into the action mode, wherein we push ourselves to act as quickly as possible when faced with dangerous or life threatening situations. Situations like these are termed as short-term strain and are regarded as helpful & rather harmless kind of stress. No doubt, there exists harmful stress, which doesn’t wear off even after we have steered clear of a dangerous situation. This stress is often long-term & keeps the body in its action mode, thereby raising the blood pressure & heart rate which can be seriously damaging for the body over a period of time.

Daily practice of relaxation meditation will help you feel benefits for your mind & body. Over a period of time, with steady practice, you’ll gain knowledge of how to relax all muscles in your body and you’ll be
able to release tensions. Once you can overcome & let go of worries, you will save yourself all unnecessary headaches. Another lesson worth learning through relaxation meditation is how to reduce your blood pressure & slow your heart rate through practice of imagery meditation & deep breathing
exercises that are simple.

Different Kinds of Relaxation Meditation:

Breathing Meditation

It’s the easiest kind of meditation, yet very effective. Through breathing meditation, you will be able
to relax your body & mind, slow down the heart rate and live a healthier life. Also, you will notice that
it helps you think clearly and stay more balanced & centered.

Imagery Meditation

Imagery meditation seems to work wonderfully when trying to clear the mind of worries; moreover it helps you to retreat from a day full of stress. It brings you in an absolute state of relaxation and then lets you head to that place where you feel at peace and feel calm. There’s just your desired scenery &
you….nothing & no one else.

Mindful Meditation

It’s a great technique to get the body to relax and calm down the mind. Mindful meditation focuses on teaching you how to feel your body, become aware of it and accept it as it is. It involves you to pay attention to all the diverse sensations within your body, beginning at your feet and then moving
slowly upwards through the body, right till your face.

In today’s stressful & hectic life, majority of us come back home to zone out on the couch facing the TV….and for us, this is how we relax! What we don’t realize is that this, unfortunately, doesn’t do much good to reduce damaging effects caused by stress on our body & minds.

Instead, in order to combat stress effectively, we must activate our body’s innate relaxation response. This can be done by practicing some simple relaxation techniques like deep breathing, yoga, visualization, meditation, or by indulging in rhythmic exercise, for instance mindful walking, running & cycling. When we make an effort to take out time for such activities, it helps to lessen everyday stress as well as boosts our mood & energy.

In this article we have mentioned two of the most popular relaxation exercises that can help you to calm down and feel peaceful.

Relaxation exercise #1

Deep Breathing

The key here is to deeply breathe from your abdomen, get all the fresh air that you can into your lungs. Whenever you’re taking deep breaths from your abdomen, you’re inhaling more oxygen, and that makes you less tense & less anxious.

Sit in a comfortable position; keep your back in an upright/straight position. Place one hand on the
chest; place your other hand on the belly.

Then take a deep breath through the nose. Your hand that’s on the belly should rise. Keep in mind that your other hand- on the chest must move very slightly.

Now exhale through the mouth…contracting the abdominal muscles, breathe out as much as you can. Your hand on the belly will move in when you exhale.

Carry on breathing in through the nose & breathing out through the mouth. Try & inhale enough
air so that the lower abdomen will rise and fall. Slowly count as you are exhaling.

Relaxation exercise #2

Progressive muscle relaxation

This technique involves a 2-step procedure where you methodically tense & then relax the diverse muscle groups in your body.

In case you’ve had any history with back problems, muscle spasms or a serious injury, then please consult with a doctor before you practice this technique.

Majority relaxation practitioners begin with the feet, slowly working upwards to the face.

Sit comfortably. Take your time to relax and then breathe slowly taking deep breaths.

Once you’re feeling relaxed, get ready to begin, shift all your attention towards the right foot.
Focus on the foot and see how it feels.

Gradually tense muscles of this foot & squeeze the muscles tightly. Hold on and count till 10.

Now, relax your foot. Focus how the tension will flow away & how the foot feels as though it is
limp & loose.

Keep breathing slowly & deeply as you stay in the state of relaxation for a minute.

Next, follow the same steps with your left foot.

Slowly, move upwards, focusing on every part of the body, keep contracting & then relaxing your
muscles.

This technique follows a specific sequence:

1.
The Right foot*

2.
The Left foot

3.
The Right calf

4.
The Left calf

5.
The Right thigh

6.
The Left thigh

7.
Hips & buttocks

8.
The Stomach

9.
The Chest

10.
The Back

11.
The Right arm/hand

12.
The Left arm/hand

13.
The Neck & shoulders

14.
The Face

*A person who is left-handed should begin with his/her left foot.

Every day, stress, disappointments, frustrations, anger, and several negative emotions affect a person’s mind adversely. It is these negative actions & emotions that need to be calmly & effectively dealt with. Set-backs arising from such situations ought to be received without causing any injury to your wellbeing. Mindfulness Meditation as a medicinal practice helps to effectively deal with such negative emotions in an efficient manner.

This form of meditation is also identified by other names like Insightful Meditation which concentrates on allowing people to be conscious & sensitive to their surroundings, helps them grow a sense of compassion in perceiving each moment, thereby enabling these people to accept tense situations, rather than avoiding them. When you are aware of your minds inner state during a Mindfulness Meditation session, you come to accept a difficult situation in your life without much conflict.

By practicing Meditation, one can train the mind to attain a position of tranquility, where the outside forces cannot disturb us. This art of Meditation aids in training & developing strength of one’s mind to
accomplish a state of peacefulness.

Mindfulness Meditation can be practiced by being seated in any appropriate upright posture- such as being seated cross-legged with your back straight, focusing on your breathing which helps you to become aware of your current thought patterns as well as inner state.

Practicing Mindfulness Meditation helps you focus your concentration on your thoughts, your actions, and all present moments in a very non-judgmental way. This form of meditation doesn’t encourage thinking &
evaluating any past actions or situations and neither to think of our uncertain future.

Practicing Mindfulness Meditation can be done through formal & informal techniques. Yoga happens to be one of the formal techniques for Mindfulness Meditation, wherein the person controls and becomes aware of his/her breathing patterns along with suitable body movements.

The 1st step is to be seated in a position that is comfortable, make sure your back is in an upright/ straight position. Take your time to feel at ease & comfortable. Mindfulness meditation involves
your eyes to be partially open, however relaxed. Next, look down towards the floor, then your feet- simply gaze. Don’t stare, don’t be distracted.

The 2nd step is to start paying some attention towards your breathing. Don’t alter the pattern of your breathing or push yourself to deep breathe. Simply observe the inhalation and exhalation of the
pattern of your natural breath. Pay attention to what it feels like.

The 3rd step is to make sure that you don’t allow yourself to get distracted. After sometime, it’s natural that your mind will begin to wander; you’ll have thoughts penetrating your mind. At this stage, don’t force these thoughts out from your mind. Instead, calmly observe them. Slowly, acknowledge that these thoughts exist, because by doing so you accept them and then that helps you to let go of such thoughts.

The last step is to continue the meditation session for the duration that you feel comfortable with. For instance, ideally a 10 to 20 minute meditation session every morning & then again in the evening is all
you need.

It is seen that people try meditation in great numbers, but only a small percentage of these people actually continue to meditate through life. Unfortunate as it is, I feel that a possible cause for the same is that majority beginners don’t understand the mindset which is required to make meditation practice sustainable.

Through this article, we would like to share some practical recommendations which could help beginners to get past their initial hurdles:
Make meditation a formal, everyday practice. The only way for you to reach the next levels in meditation are by having a specific time where you sit still and meditate.
Always begin with concentrating on your breath. Deep breathing will slow your heart rate, relax all your muscles, help you focus your mind & is therefore the ideal way for you to start the practice.
You must stretch before you begin. Stretching will help loosen all your tendons & muscles and thereby comfortably letting you slip into the seated meditation posture. Furthermore, stretching kick starts the
“going inward” process & brings an added volume of attention towards the body.
Always meditate with a purpose. All beginners should know that meditation’s an ACTIVE practice. To focus your attention at a single thought/target is very hard work, so you must be purposefully occupied!
Know that frustration will creep in. beginners always fight with thoughts like “why am I here?”, “what am I doing?”, “why can’t I quiet my mind & focus my thoughts?” Whenever this happens, try focusing on
your breathing and release all frustrated feelings.
Allow yourself to feel all parts of your body. When the meditative state has begun to take its hold, the beginner must become aware of his/her body. Once your mind becomes still & quiet, focus at your feet,
slowly moving up from the feet (including all internal organs). If you can achieve this, know that you’re on the right track.
It’s good to have a specific room or spot for daily meditation sessions. Your meditation spot shouldn’t be the area where you sleep or work. Placing spiritual paraphernalia & candles inside this space will
help you to feel comfortable.
Listening to relaxing music can be of great help to relax your mind if you’re in an agitated state. Don’t push yourself, just let go & relax.
Keep away from distractions. Beginners are usually easily distracted, so keep your cell phone on silent mode, rid your mind of daily duties, etc. the phone ringing, a coffee pot whistle or your kid crying
may distract you & you won’t reach a deep relaxation state.
Beginners find it very challenging to meditate with their eyes closed. So use a candle. Light a candle & use it as the spot where you focus. This will help you strengthen attention span and can be extremely powerful.

Music is not traditionally used during meditation but over time certain musical sounds have come to be associated with meditation and relaxation. What is the best meditation music will depend on the individual person and their mood at the moment they are trying to meditate so a variety of relaxing music should be available for you to select from as you try to enter your meditation state. Usually the music is influenced by asian or aboriginal themes, sometimes they are more religious sounding but all have a calming affect on your body to allow you to meditate with greater focus.

Tibetan Chakra Meditations is a very popular music CD. It has 7 chakra songs, a sonic massage song and 7 plain chakra tones. The Tibetan Chakra style of music has its roots in yoga and other far east practices and combines with the monk stylings of the Tibetans. Very soothing and helpful to get your body in a relaxed state.

The Silent Path is a very relaxing spiritual music CD described as Exquisite melodic orchestrations, lending instruments with rich synthesizer textures and the etheral sound of a giant sacred boal create an optimum setting for total relxation, total well-being on all levels.

Know Your Purpose Through Meditation This meditation program is designed to help you find your life’s purpose. Knowing your life’s purpose can help you to lead a more fulfilling, successful life. Goals that are consistent with your purpose are easier to reach, more exciting, and more rewarding. Purposeful people are more passionate, more focused, and an inspiration to others. Everyone’s life has a purpose, but few
people know clearly what it is. Many books and speakers talk about purpose and its importance, but few give clear guidance on how to find it. This meditation is designed to create the conditions to help you access the specific details of your purpose.

Yoga Zone: Music for Yoga Practice. This mostly acoustic compilation of 13 cuts by such Windham Hill artists as William Ackerman and Michael Hedges mesh well for a soothing, even-paced (although sometimes a bit busy) musical experience that’s excellent as accompaniment to a yoga routine. With a slow, steady rhythm, “The White Spirit” from French duo Uman unfolds the collection splendidly, transporting the listener to an exotic, rhythmic place perfect for focusing the mind and stretching the body. Other standouts include “Bridges” from Celtic-folk artists Nightnoise, featuring a lyrical acoustic guitar and plaintive violin; Philip Aaberg’s poetic “Crying Smile”; and Patrick O’Hearn’s electronic “87 Dreams of a Lifetime,” whose cadences are just spirited enough to keep your body moving while still laid-back in delivery and meter. Yoga Zone is a solid collection whose only weakness lies in its demand to be listened to rather than used to underscore physical movement.

As you can see there are a variety of music cds available that can be used for meditation and it really will depend on what you find most soothing to you that will make it the best meditation music. Remember you want to be able to focus your mind on one specific thought to achieve the best meditation and that means the music should not distract you but rather help you focus!

Despite many of us having come across the term ‘meditation’, very few of us actually know what meditation involves and the benefits it can have on the human mind and body. Some people believe that meditation is just mental concentration and others think that it is to think or imagine something which can give us peace and tranquility. Especially in today’s modern fast paced society, it is important to take some time out from our stress laden lives and meditation is an excellent way in which to help the mind slow down and stop the incessant activity of our minds.

This modern stress can build up in our bodies and can lead to physical illness and disease, so it is important to try and stop it in its tracks and not allow stress to becoming chronic and prolonged. Meditation can help with this stress overload and calm and relax our minds and body almost like a reset switch. It actually has a physiological benefit on our bodies by reducing the stress hormones and even lowering the heart rate and blood pressure for example.

The idea behind meditation is to consciously relax your body and focus your thoughts on one thing for a sustained period. This occupies your mind, diverting it from the problems that are causing you stress. It gives your body time to relax and recuperate, and to clear away stress hormones that may have built up. It has been shown that meditation techniques have a very real effect on reducing stress.

Meditation is not just sitting still in one place and thinking about something in particular with our eyes closed. It goes beyond that. Meditation is a state of profound, deep peace that occurs when our minds are calm and silent yet we are fully alert. Meditation is not about concentration, which focuses the mind on a
particular object or idea for long periods of time. Meditation is being in a state of awareness.

There is a basic process to follow when beginning meditation and these steps are :

-
Sit quietly and comfortably.

-
Close your eyes.

-
Start by relaxing the muscles of your feet and work up your body relaxing muscles (a technique like Progressive Muscular Relaxation can be useful for this).

-
Focus your attention on your breathing.

-
Breathe in deeply and then let your breath out. Count your breaths, and say the number of the breath as you let it out (this gives you something to do with your mind, helping you to avoid distraction).

-
Do this for ten or twenty minutes.

Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years and basically grew up and developed in the Eastern cultures. Over the centuries, these meditation and relaxation techniques have been developed and refined with the specific purpose that the ordinary layperson can help themselves achieve a state of mental peace, clarity and self-awareness and relief from modern day stress. Anyone can do meditation,
regardless of age, sex, religion, background etc.

Just 10 – 15 minutes of meditation a day can help alleviate stress and a range of
other health benefits such as :-

-
Reduces anxiety attacks as it lowers the levels of blood lactate.

-
Builds self confidence.

-
Increases serotonin which influences moods and behavior. Low levels of serotonin are associated with depression, headaches and insomnia.

-
Enhances energy, strength and vigor.

-
Helps keep blood pressure normal

-
Creates a state of deep relaxation and general feeling of wellbeing

-
Helps with P.M.T.

-
Increases concentration and strengthens the mind

-
Helps reduce heart disease

-
Helps with weight loss

There are a wide range of benefits in the regular practice of meditation and it will lead to a deeper state of self-awareness and relaxation. You will become calmer and more in control of everyday stressful situations enabling you to cope better. You will generally become a more relaxed and happier individual with regular meditation which only requires a few minutes each day.
